City-Community Restores Coastal Zone Through Mangrove Planting

As many as 1,040 volunteers consisting of 530 Japanese people along with 150 other volunteers from Jakarta Provincial Government, AEON Environmental Foundation, Saka Kalpataru and Saka Wanabakti Pramuka Scout members, community environmentalists, academics and public figures are campaigning mangrove planting in Elang Laut area, Indah Kapuk Beach, Saturday (7/13).

"This action a momentum for all elements of society in improving the quality of the capital's environment," disclosed Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Andono Warih.

He explained that mangrove forests could absorb dangerous heavy metals and improve water quality to be cleaner and also help the natural process to get better air quality.

It also functions as a natural ocean wave breaker along the north coast of Jakarta and adds green open space, as well as reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2011-2013, as many as 63,000 mangrove trees were planted by 5,000 volunteers consisting of 3,500 Japanese people, which are still well-maintained. Seeing this, the Jakarta Provincial Government and the AEON Environmental Foundation replanted mangrove trees in the period 2018-2020.

Then in 2018, similar action was also spotted through a thousand trees planting from 1,000 volunteers consisting of 500 Japanese volunteers and 500 Indonesian volunteers.

"Certainly we'll do the same action next year," he asserted.
